Celsius and Fahrenheit: Why Two Scales Exist
Two scales, two different starting points and two different degree sizes. Every awkward part of converting between them comes from that.
Two scales built on different anchors
Celsius and Fahrenheit measure the same thing and disagree about almost everything else, because each was pinned to different reference points.

Celsius was fixed to water and split into a hundred parts, which is where its older name centigrade came from. Fahrenheit was fixed to a brine mixture and to body temperature, and water landed where it happened to land.
Why the degrees are different sizes
Between freezing and boiling there are 100 Celsius degrees and 180 Fahrenheit degrees. The same physical interval, divided into different numbers of parts.
So one Celsius degree is 180/100 = 9/5 of a Fahrenheit degree — a Celsius degree is the larger step. That ratio is the multiplication in the conversion formula, and it is not an arbitrary constant.
Why the zeros do not line up
Water freezes at 0 °C and at 32 °F. The scales do not share a starting point, so converting has to shift as well as scale — and the shift is the 32.
Doing only the multiplication is the most common manual error, and it leaves every answer exactly 32 degrees too low. It is a big enough gap to notice, which is some consolation.
The point where they agree
There is exactly one temperature that reads the same on both scales, and it can be found rather than memorised.
- C = 1.8C + 32set the two scales equal

- C = −40so −40 °C is −40 °F
It exists because the two scales are straight lines with different slopes, and two lines that are not parallel cross exactly once.
Where kelvin fits
Kelvin takes the Celsius degree size and moves the zero down to absolute zero, the coldest temperature that can exist. So K = C + 273.15, with no multiplication at all.
That is why science uses it. With a true zero, ratios become meaningful — 200 K really is twice as hot as 100 K in terms of thermal energy, whereas 20 °C is not twice 10 °C in any physical sense.
It also removes negative temperatures entirely, which simplifies the gas laws and thermodynamics considerably.
