Why there are two steps
The scales differ in two ways. A Celsius degree is 9/5 as large as a Fahrenheit degree, which is the scaling. And their zeros are in different places — 0 °C is 32 °F — which is the shift. A conversion has to undo both.
Reading the formula backwards
Going from Fahrenheit to Celsius means undoing the steps in reverse order: subtract the 32 first, then multiply by 5/9. Doing them in the original order gives an answer that is wrong by about 18 degrees.

Forgetting the 32
Multiplying by 9/5 alone converts the size of a degree but not the position of zero. Every answer then comes out 32 too low.
Subtracting after multiplying
In the F → C direction the subtraction comes first. Multiplying first and subtracting afterwards is a different, wrong calculation.
Using the formula on a temperature difference
A change of 10 °C is a change of 18 °F, not 50 °F. Differences scale but do not shift — the 32 does not apply.

Is there a temperature that reads the same on both scales?
Yes, −40. It is where the two lines cross, and you can find it by solving C = C × 9/5 + 32.
What is the quick mental version?
Double it and add 30. For 25 °C that gives 80 against a true 77 — close enough for weather, not for anything that is marked.
Why does the calculator also show kelvin?
Because kelvin shares Celsius's degree size and only shifts the zero to absolute zero, so it is one addition away and often what a science question wants.
