Which method should I use to solve a quadratic?
Try factoring first — it is fastest when the numbers are friendly. If no integer pair works, use the quadratic formula, which always works. Completing the square is worth knowing because it is where the formula comes from, not because it is quicker.
What does “solve for x” actually mean?
It means getting x alone on one side of the equals sign, with everything else on the other. You do that by undoing operations in reverse order, doing the same thing to both sides each time so the equation stays true.
Do I need algebra before geometry?
For most of geometry, yes. Area, slope and the Pythagorean theorem all end in an equation you have to solve. Working through linear equations first makes geometry feel like applying something you already know.
